The high costs of space telecommunications systems are obliging users to combine resources and designers to seek multimission architectures. The author describes the procedure used in defining such architectures. Optimisation of orbital and ground facilities leads to complex payloads, the production of which calls for the mastery of some techniques which are described. The article ends with two examples of multimission systems: Telecom 2 / Syracuse II and Eutelsat II.
