This paper gives an overview of key optoelectronic technologies such as detectors for the near to the far infrared, solid state, semiconductor and CO2-lasers, as well as optical sensors developed at the European Space Agency (ESA) in the framework of Earth remote sensing, astronomical observations from space, laser communications, attitude control, guidance and landing of spacecraft. The short and mid-term development programme of these optoelectronics components and sensors will be described together with new trends for future space applications.
