A complex for astrophysical applications was designed for the flight of the second bulgarian cosmonaut. The complex named ROZHEN contains astonomical CCD camera with cooled sensor and 16-bit onboard computer for data handling and storage of observed images. The possibility of flexible dialog with the cosmonaut-operator controlling the experiments allows for the higher reliability of the obtained results and for their onboard estimations. Thus were able to perform many astrophysical experiments and to resolve some astronavigational problems. The distributed processing system and the specialized architecture of the complex enabled the efficient onboard two stage compression of the registered images. The telemetric channel provided system performance and express telemetric control of the archived observations. The architecture, the possibilities and the data from ground-based tests of the complex are discussed in this paper.
