The paper has by no means been an exhaustive account of research on space photovoltaics. It is at best a brief survey of some of the highlights of recent developments in space solar cell research, and has of necessity neglected a variety of topics, particularly with regard to space solar array technology. Included in the latter are solar cell contact and interconnect technology, solar cell covers and adhesives, and array stowage, transportation and deployment. It is also not described some of the areas of emerging interest, such as the potential application of electronic superlattice materials to space photovoltaic energy conversion, among others. It has been attempted to show how some of the unique requirments of potential space applications shapes the nature of space photovoltatic energy-conversion research, and trust that those areas have become apparent where space and terrestrial photovoltaic research interests are synergistic. The need for high performance, reliability and improved lifetime for space power systems will continue to be the major motivating factors in this area for some time. (in Band: Photovoltaic power)
