This paper outlines a system level numerical technique to address automotive electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. The number of tests to achieve vehicular EMC is growing at a rapid pace in view of the increasing electronic content of the vehicle. The system level approach described here is a natural extension of the speicification approach where bench level tests for emission and susceptibility characterization are performed on individual components. The aim of the system level approach is to ensure that specifications generated for each component are consistent and would result in overall electromagnetic compatibility of the system. Feasibility issues and requirements for ease of implementation in a car production environment are addressed, accounted for, and discussed.
