The new generation radars provide substantial improvements in the quality of plot data and the characteristics of the data has a significant influence on radar data processing. The smaller normal errors reduce the need for smoothing, but then the sensitivity to the odd exceptional errors is increased. Furthermore, in a multi-radar environment, the effects of alignment errors become even more significant. There is a wide choice of multi-radar processing methods which offer various theoretical and practical advantages. However, to maintain a high level of track performance, methods that offer some protection against the exceptional plot errors and radar misalignment are likely to be the most appropriate for a practical system.
