A SPICE computer aided analysis program is used to study magnetic devices exhibiting hysteresis and saturation effects. An electrical circuit is used to simulate hysteresis, and a series of models are used to simulate the transition in and out of saturation. The program includes logical switching between appropriate models depending on whether the magnetic coil is saturated or not. Examples are included of circuits with saturation, hysteresis, and a combination of both. These models provide a compatibility to perform a detailed analysis of the magnetic phenomena and can lead to more efficient use of weight and volume in power supplies. A SPICE model is developed to aid in the analysis of electronic circuits with non-linear magnetic components. The non-linear aspects covered are: Hysteresis Loop Behavior, Saturation of the Magnetic Core. This model has application to periodic circuits such as snubbers and magnetic amplifiers. Additionally, worst-case analysis of fault conditions can be treated, predicting fault currents and voltages. The model features automatic switching from one linear regime to another where initial conditions and boundary conditions for the second regime are available, and the solution continues into a second linear regime without analyst assistance. These switches are facilitated by use of the controlled variable and the polynomial commands available in the SPICE code, saving the analyst the tedious job of iterative solutions and matching conditions for each case. Many examples are presented with the associated SPICE code. The practical aspects of getting SPICE to operate is discussed, and some hints are included.
