The introduction of data buses into automobiles has the potential to revolutionise the design of vehicle systems. It will no longer be adequate to design sub-systems of cars in isolation. Instead it will be necessary to design the whole vehicle as one integrated system. Selection of the correct design philosophy for any particular vehicle system involves numerous trade offs and the data bus designers skill will be selecting the optimum combination of options for a particular application. In making this selection due consideration must be given to compliance with various standards. Failure to agree an appropriate set of workable standards will force vehicle manufacturers into an untenable commercial position if they wish to capitalise on the potential advantages of data buses and so would seriously delay their introduction. Successful introduction of data buses will require designs which not only have good reliability in the automotive environment but will need to have well understood failure modes to avoid disabling vehicles unnecessarily or, more seriously, to avoid simple data corruption causing potentially dangerous vehicle operation. Successful design will therefore require expertise in automotive systems and environments as well as in data bus design.
