The Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) constitutes the largest collection of test cells, wind tunnels, altitude chambers, and ballistic ranges in the free world. AEDC is presently in the midst of an aggressive investment program to decrease the cost of aerospace testing by improving test efficiency as well as preparing for test requirements projected through 1993. These initiatives include multiple cell operation and freejet testing in engine test cells; increased transient testing in wind tunnels and test cells; on-line analysis, real-time model validation and comparison; and dynamic, data acquisition and analysis in all of AEDC's test units. Each of these test initiatives places tremendous burdens on the existing ADP systems at AEDC. In order to achieve these gains in testing, a multimillion dollar program has been initiated to substantially upgrade the data processing capabilities. This effort, the Facility Computer Enhancement Program (FCEP), replaces the existing facility computers with new and more powerful computers. The program includes installation of state-of-the-art communications networks which will link all test processors located at the Center. This paper discusses trade-offs and technical considerations made during the first year of the program as well as the design of the new system.
