These Bo-Bo locomotives are designed for the East and West Coast Main Lines (London - Edinburgh and Glasgow). They are to operate passenger trains with a maximum speed of 225 km/hr and trains of up to 750 tonnes at a maximum of 160 km/hr. They have a continuous rating of 4530 kW at rail. One end of the locomotive is aerodynamically styled to suit high speed operation. Roof mounted equipment consists of a single pantograph and a vacuum circuit breaker. The main transformer is mounted on the locomotive underframe. The remaining electrical equipment is mounted in the locomotive body either side of a central corridor. The traction motors are suspended from the locomotive body and drive a bogie mounted gear-box via a cardan shaft. The gearbox drives the axle via a flexible coupling. This arrangement minimises the unsprung weight on each axle. The traction motor also incorporates a friction brake disc at the non-drive end.
