Disabled people who use powered wheelchairs to provide a degree of independence require their wheelchair controller to possess a number of features. These include safety, reliability, ease of use, adaptability, low cost, durability and efficiency. Available controllers are often limited in their ability to offer these features, particularly in the areas of safety, reliability and efficiency in use. The user requires a safe control system that prevents them losing control of the chair and that possesses a high reliability so that the avaiability of their chair is maximised. The interface with the wheelchair user is an area of the controller design which must be carefully considered and both the control of the chair and the safety of the occupant are crucially important. It should be remembered that disabled people in powered wheelchairs will often be suffering from diseases which prevent them exerting fine positional control with their hands. The controller must assist the user in maintaining control but the user must always be able to stop the chair at any time. A controller should also be able to compare the desired motion from the user with the actual motion of the motors and correct any difference by changing the motor drive accordingly.
