For painting the A-Class a completely new paint process was created. The decision for this new process was made after a contest of alternative painting concepts for new materials. The main steps of the decided and realised process are: nickel- and nitrite-free surface pretreatment, lead-free cathodic dip primer, integrated basecoat system in which the functionality of the primer surfacer and the basecoat are integrated in a wet in wet system and newly developed clearcoat powder slurry which is a clearcoat system consisting of powder particles dispersed in water. The lecture will give insight into the material concept used for die top coat system md will describe die technicai realisation of the paint process. It will as well mention the technical innovations introduced with the A-Class necessary to realize the surface treatment concept of this new car.
