The geometric shape of the tyres can have a large influence on the aerodynamic drag of a passenger car as it has been shown already in different publications. However, so far it is not possible to quantify the aerodynamic characteristics of a tyre without measuring it mounted on a vehicle in a wind tunnel and comparing it to other tyres. For this reason a research project at the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering at the University of Stuttgart (IVK) was launched with the intention of categorising the aerodynamic characteristics of passenger car tyres. This paper presents an overview of the research project including first results of a simplified test setup that will be compared to wind tunnel measurements of a vehicle. CFD simulations show with the improved simplified wheel house that both the deltas in aerodynamic drag and the flow field around the wheel are comparable to a full vehicle for all tyres investigated. So far, this has only been tested with a tyre size of 205/55 R16, so the next step will be to evaluate the comparison with other tyre sizes and also to build a hardware prototype for wind tunnel testing. If the functionality is confirmed, a simplified test bench is available to evaluate tyres independently from a vehicle.
