In Western Europe the majority of railway transports is supplied electrically (approx. 85 % of all journeys on approx. 50% of the tracks). Electrical frequencies between 16.7 Hz and 50.0 Hz and high voltages between 8 kV up to 50 kV have established in Europe due to technical or historical reasons. An integration of renewable energy systems, specifically photovoltaic systems (PV) into the railway grid may make sense; particularly against the background that the term railway has a green appeal. Target of this publication is to show the technical challenges and design aspects for the electrical connection of such PV systems to the rail grid. Factors like electrical energy yield, single-phase connection, grid stability, voltage, variability of load, mechanical vibrations caused by passing high-speed trains (pressure sound wave), installation, safety aspects, and first of all costs have to be considered.
