The new V8 engine family from Mercedes-AMG is the latest member of the BlueDIRECT engine family. Its defining features are outstanding power delivery, performance values at the racing sport level, lightweight construction and high efficiency and environmental friendliness. Its emotional, unmistakable AMG V8 engine sound is just as fascinating as the spontaneous response behavior and the high traction. The mix is prepared by a 3rd generation gasoline direct injection system with piezo injectors and a spray-guided combustion process. The highly efficient and economical AMG 4-liter V8 biturbo engine fulfills the EU6-2 exhaust gas standard. In the new V8 engine family, a twin turbocharger is used; the two chargers are not located outside on the cylinder banks but between the banks, in the cylinder-V (the "hot inner V"). The advantages: Compact engine structure, optimum response behavior and low exhaust gas emissions. The dry sump lubrication in the M178 allows for the installation position and the center of gravity of the unit to be lowered; it also forms the basis for high lateral accelerations. The M178 from Mercedes-AMG is thus the world's first sports car engine with a hot inner V and dry sump lubrication. The other highlights in the new V8 engine family are the crankcase made of aluminum sand casting and the closed deck design for ultra-high strength with as low a weight as possible with cylinder barrels in NANOSLIDE technology as well as special honing technology (using a torque plate). The crankshaft assembly features aluminum forged pistons with low weight, high strength and friction-optimized piston ring package for the best possible performance and a weight-reduced aluminum viscous torsional vibration damper. An indirect charge air cooling system with a low-temperature water circuit ensures minimum pressure losses and optimum cooling of the charge air. The electronically-controlled deceleration air valves ensure very spontaneous and direct response behavior. The dual-mass flywheel with centrifugal pendulum in the M178 improves the smooth operation and comfort of the drive train. A further highlight is the AMG Sport exhaust system with fully-variably controlled exhaust flaps. With this engine family, Mercedes-AMG once again offers proof of its expertise in developing high-performance assemblies. These units cannot fail to impress with their torque, power output, low consumption, very good comfort and suitability for everyday use and emotion-provoking exhaust systems.
