The next generation of GM front wheel drive 6-speed automatic transmissions (GF6 Gen III) has been improved to meet the increased customer expectations in regards of fuel economy and to react upon environmental requirements to the vehicle. Using fuel economy as main driver for transmission enhancement, changes to the line pressure control system, oil level control system, pump, and lubrication system were implemented. Another feature of the third generation is the introduction of an external accumulator to make the GF6 Gen III transmission Stop-Start capable. The GF6 Gen III has been launched in North America in September 2013 in the Chevrolet Malibu and will be introduced in Europe at the end of 2014 for Opel/Vauxhall vehicles. With a torque capacity of up to 400 Nm for diesel engines and 350 Nm for gasoline engines the transmission will be rolled out in more than 100 GM vehicle applications around the world.
