This paper discusses a pre-development study to determine the best engine encapsulation concept for a specific JLR vehicle, according to EU Regulation 725/2011. An engine mounted approach was evaluated in relation to the acoustic and thermal performance of the concept, including: heat storage, cooling system performance, manufacturability and thermal safety of the engine and accessories. Several configurations considering different areas of engine coverage were analysed to determine the best compromise among the above-mentioned criteria. These above mentioned activities have led to the possibility to refine and feed analytical models which have been used to forecast fuel economy benefits on a newly developed JLR engine family. The fuel economy improvement which could be claimed for engine encapsulation by means of EU Regulation 725/2011 was found to be 0.83% for a gasoline SUV. By combining encapsulation with grill shutters increased the potential benefit to 1.47%. Fuel consumption measurements based on the air-fuel ratio method have even shown bigger CO2 saving potentials. The thermal safety investigations have shown an overall temperature increase in the engine bay due to the applied engine encapsulation. But most of the affected components are still far away from their temperature limits. Additional thermal protection in the engine bay and an adjusted cooling system help to avoid thermal safety issues. The engine encapsulation concept also had a noticeable improvement to the vehicle acoustics, both interior and exterior.
