This paper investigates methods for the decision-making of a collision avoidance system with regard to automatic braking and swerving. The resulting system considers a traffic flow on two lanes and uses the latest possible point for the intervention if the driver does not react. The decision is based on certain time measures and distances. To avoid collisions in longitudinal direction emergency braking is suitable in many situations. However, for higher velocities, an evasive maneuver has the advantage that it is applicable at closer distance to the obstacle, if there is enough free space on the side. Therefore an evasive maneuver still can be applied, if emergency braking does not avoid a collision.
