Widespread in manufacturing since the 1980s, the application of lean management in the aircraft maintenance sector is quite new. This literature review is the prelude to a more comprehensive study. We also present documented results from a case study of the application of Six Sigma lean management to aircraft maintenance, made available by Air France. Due to the rarity of published data on this subject, more studies are needed in order to describe the lean process as it might be used in aircraft maintenance and to understand its impact on occupational health and safety in this field.
