Worm gear set used for Electric Power Assist Steering (EPS) require high efficiency and reliability, and also high productivity. A precise designing and manufacturing method must, therefore, be developed. This paper provides a precise analysis of the design method of a worm gear set composed of non-intersected and inclined axes. First, theoretical equations are provided for the profile of the type 3 worm or worm hob. Second, theoretical equations are derived to represent the profile of the wheel cut by this type 3 worm hob. Third, a numerical analysis method is proposed for obtaining the tooth contact between the wheel and the type 3 worm. Then, the theory is verified by trial cutting the wheel with the type 3 worm hob and examining tooth contact.
