Road construction machines belong to construction machines, which are designed to develop and extend infrastructure. Beginning with a Stabilizer, designed to solidify the soil, followed by soil compactors, to compact the soil, pavers, to finish the street, asphalt compactors that compact the asphalt, and cold milling machines, which mill the asphalt to bring it to the recycler. All these machine types belong to the division of mobile road construction machinery. Road construction machinery also includes asphalt plants, which can be delivered by a BOMAG sister company. BOMAG is world market leader in compaction and produces nearly the whole range of road construction machines. This paper shows a general approach to collect and analyze working modes, load spectrum, load peaks and dynamic loads. This will be shown on a machine category of road construction machinery, cold milling machines, especially at compact milling machines. This category of machines is quiet new within the product range of BOMAG. To be able to develop a new machine for the very specific market of cold milling machines, with a demand of high performance, low fuel consumption and lowest tool wear, BOMAG started a huge measurement- and testing project, to procure and define numbers on load spectrum, load peaks, dynamics etc.. The project was addressed, to be able to develop the best machine to the market. This project and its results will be described in detail within this paper.
