In computational mechanics, and in particular in multibody dynamics, benchmarks are very helpful to identify the strongs and weaks of algorithms, formalisms, and computer program packages with respect to applications in science and engineering. The history of benchmark problems is reviewed, some example including gyrodynamics, mechanisms, road and rail vehicles as well as flexible beams are presented. Future developments will be discussed.
