Airbags are a type of automobile safety restraint like seat belts. In most countries airbags are mandatory for all passenger cars. It is given a broad outlook about the importance of airbags, working of airbags, fibres and fabrics used and manufacturing of airbags. Airbags are gas-inflated cushions built into the steering wheel, dashboard, door, roof or seat of a car that use a crash sensor to trigger a rapid expansion to protect passengers from the impact of an accident. The goal of an airbag is to slow the passenger's motion as evenly as possible in a fraction of a second. The working of an airbag is a precision application. In just 0.03 seconds airbags should begin and by 0.06 seconds after crash they should be fully inflated. Types of airbags are: airbags for frontal injury, side airbags for cars, airbags for motorcycle, pedestrian protective airbags. Airbag fabrics are made of nylon 6,6 multifilament yarns with counts from 235 tex to 940 tex. Airbag fabrics are generally dense. Tensile strength, elongation, tear propagation resistance and weight requirement of the airbag fabrics are critical. Technical textiles are one of the most dynamic areas for the future of the textile industry in India. There are currently 2 pinciple material types which are used in the manufacture of airbags. They are uncoated nylon and coated nylon. The 2 types of commonly used coatings are silicone and neoprene. The airbag fabric may be coated to increase the strength of the fabric so that the fabric is reinforced. By increasing the strength of the fabric, breakage of the airbag can be minimised. The principle conclusion is that driver airbags save lives.
