Single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) have been practically applied in transportation. The short primary of SLIM is installed on the bogie frame, and the reaction plates and the back-irons, as long secondary, is installed between the rails and fixed on the sleepers. Due to the thermal expansion and contraction of solid, there is an interval space between the two adjacent secondary. Especially in the railway crossing, the interval space is a little large. In this paper, the effect of the reaction plate discontinuance, including the interval space size and position, on the thrust performance of a SLIM has been studied with the time-stepping finite element method. The results can give guidance to the secondary installing and the motor control.
