Performance and availability of road structure is a key infrastructure element of a country's social and economic development. The increasing traffic volume contributes to the stress on the natural environment and the population. Noise like exhaust gas is a major pollutant of the environment. The noise emitted by traffic is not only annoying, but also a health risk. The aim of the research project "LIDAK", funded by the Bundestanstalt für Straßenwesen, is the development of a noise-reducing road surface. The developed road surface is based on a plastic matrix, which is reinforced with a textile structure. The minimum requirements, which need to be fulfilled by the new surface are performance characteristics and acoustic benefits which match or exceed those of a porous asphalt. A significant improvement in durability compared to asphalt is also desirable. The road surface is designed as a multilayer structure. The textured layer reduces noise creation, while a porous layer underneath absorbs emitted sounds. The layers of the road surface are industrially prefabricated, rolled and applied by shear resistant to the existing substructure. This allows continuous production as well as a consistent quality and offers faster more efficient application compared to conventional road surfaces.
