Two important objectives of the automotive industry are the decrease in car weight and improvement in safety. High strength steels especially advanced high strength steels and the third generation high strength steels are the main measures to reduce automotive weight and improve safety in steel industry. Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) has been recently proposed by Speer as a fundamentally new way of producing martensite steels containing a considerable amount of retained austenite, it possesses good balance properties between tensile strength and elongation. Since the first commercial QP980CR coil was successfully made in 2010 at Baosteel, forming, welding and other application behaviors of QP980CR were evaluated with automaker, and some components made by QP980CR were tested. In this paper, features of QP980CR were reviewed and the development and application of Q&P steels were forecasted.
