Over the last decade, there has been a high demand on enhancing the quality in engine control software, as well as the development efficiency in the control design process along with the complexity and sophistication in the engine control system. The model based design (MBD) has been playing a major role to tackle this demand. In Toyota, many varieties of new MBD approaches have been used in the design environment for the control system and have contributed to significantly reduce the time to market. model based calibration (MBC) for the efficiency in the calibration process and hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) for the efficiency in verification and validation of control logic are good examples. Nowadays, with enhancing the existing MBD technologies, we are moving towards achieving better efficiency at an earlier stage of the control system development. In particular, at the system planning phase, we are gradually utilizing new simulation capabilities to estimate the performance of new control features for more accurate target-setting before physical parts are made available. By having more reliable estimations of new control strategies behavior and vehicle performance in the planning phase, overall development process can be shortened. On top of that, starting the control system design without physical parts in advance will reduce the burden of the engineers consequently providing them with more time to design a better system. This paper describes how the new MBD technologies have been rolled out in Toyota as well as our challenges for further efficiency improvements. Then, the strategies to solve the challenges are addressed with some examples, the new software-in-the-loop simulator (SILS) and the model based development framework (MBDF) as a database. These two new approaches are thoroughly discussed on how they can contribute to improve efficiency in the control development. Finally, the roadmap to further develop and roll out the MBD and the MBDF is provided as our future's vision.
