Energy efficiency has effects on the availability of resources and on climate change. The EU intends to enhance the energy efficiency of products by the Ecodesign Directive. A preparating study sees a need for action concerning agricultural engineering products and construction machinery, as they offer a high energy saving potential. This need is not yet scheduled in order to account for special challenges of the industry. The industries of agricultural and construction engineering are discussing a voluntary commitment in contrast to the product centred approach of the Ecodesign Directive. The approach to improve the efficiency of agricultural and construction engineering should be holistic and is yet to be developed. In order to improve efficiency it first has to be measured to be comparable. Efficiency benchmarking of mobile machines - uniting mobile agricultural and construction machinery - is researched at the Institute of Mobile Machines and Commercial Vehicles. Resulting from the diverseness of the machines and the changing environmental conditions and material properties benchmarking mobile machines is a special challenge. Therefore specific criteria for efficiency benchmarking of mobile machines were established in one of the studies. This was done by analysing solutions from neighbouring fields of activity. The presentation first gives an overview over the basics of efficiency benchmarking particularly regarding mobile machines and shows solutions from other fields as machine tools and automobiles. The differences between a product- or machine-oriented approach to improve efficiency are discussed. Then the developed criteria for efficiency benchmarking are presented in order to account for the special conditions of mobile machines. With these criteria it is possible to develop efficiency benchmarking methods which are specially adapted to the challenges of mobile machines.
