For the modem design of railway trains, it ts the most important significant that the design and analysis considering passive safety for railway vehicles will increase the survival rate in many low velocity collision accidents. To evaluate the structural crashworthiness of a new designed subway train, a set of assessment conditions including vehicle body deformation, energy absorption and dummy responses was built based on some railway and automotive industry cntenons. A simulation model of a new designed head-car body and structures in front of the train was established with main details including the spot welding, material failure, non-linear contact and loading mass model. The simulation of a collision process ynder the certain impact scene has been done successfully. Shortages and weaknesses of the vehicle body were found outs and the part of front structures was optimized to improve the crashworthiness of body structure. The influence of criticaf factors such as spot welding and material failure on multiple parameters of the velocity acceleration, Internal energy and dummy responses was compared and analyzed. The design and optimization for front structures decreases peak value of impact force which is the impulsive foad for the carriage, reduces the fluctuation range of velocities relatively by controlling the energy transmission and absorption and there is no large acceleration. The deformation and crash-worthiness of vehicle structures meets requirements from above assessment conditions. The conclusions are: (1) According to requirements and operation conditions of a new designed subway train, a set of evaluation conditions for the structural crashworthiness were established with combining the crashworthiness criterions for subway trains in EN 15227, which one side is to evaluate energy absorption and controlled deformation of the structures by physics parameters during an impact process, and the other is the injury assessment which reflects the structural crashworthiness by responses of a dummy in the impact carriage. (2) Both spot welding model, which simulated all connections by welding points on the steel frame of the driver cab and front structures, and material failure model were applied to FE model of a new designed vehicle. Based on the simulation of a face to face impact process in the certain scene, shortages and weaknesses of the vehicle body were found out from analysis of simulation results, and front structures were optimized to improve the crashworthiness of body structure by additional cellular beams and cone-shaped structures. (3) On the view of evaluation for the vehicle body, the design and optimization for front structures decreases peak value of impact force which is an impulsive load for the carriage, reduces the fluctuation range of velocities relatively by controlling the energy transmission and absorption, and there is no large acceleration value. Therefore, the deformation and crashworthiness of vehicle structures is evaluated to satisfy with requirements from above assessment conditions. (4) On the view of simulation technologies and their application, material failure model has a distinct effect on the simulation process, and results will tally with the real scene only if the material model expresses and reflects real material property and failure behavior. And for the same reason, welding point models will be researched further.
