The parallel hybrid system of the Jetta Hybrid is based on a fuel consumption-optimized 1.41 turbocharged engine, a 20 kW electrical motor and a 7-gear double clutch transmission. A robust impulse clutch is located between the combustion engine and the electrical engine, allowing pure electric operation. The engine restart method is an impulse start. In order to allow for a comfortable restart in every driving situation the transmission control unit's conventional drivetrain programming was extended significantly. More changes were necessary for the integration of the electrical and hydraulic brake path, and for the realization of creeping and driveaway with minimally slipping driving clutches. The TCU control algorithms in place guarantee a robust and comfortable operation of the vehicle while at the same time contributing to the Jetta Hybrid's excellent driving performance and low fuel consumption.
