In-situ source characterization is a promising method for structure-borne sound sources for which no straight forward direct characterization (free velocity / blocked force) is available. Rill structure-borne sound source characterization including all translational and rotational degrees of freedom is not practical in industrial applications due to the huge complexity of the task. Hence, reductions of the problem are inevitable for all characterization methods but have to be checked for validity with reasonable deviations from the fall picture. Experimental investigations starting from the complete description are costly involve huge datasets and incorporate high uncertainty due to measurement errors. To find a workaround numerical investigations are used to shed some light on the simplification process. A train application example, the pantograph, is used to investigate the effects of simplification within the SBS characterization process for either in-situ or free characterization of the source. The advantages and disadvantages of the different source characterization procedures are discussed from a train manufacturer perspective.
