Monitoring and diagnosis of marine diesel engines working conditions onboard has been studied by integrated system which is able to perform online and offline. It was shown that thermal parameters and IAS (engine instantaneous angular speed) analysis are effective in diagnose the fault of power loss of a cylinder on an engine, therefore, it is suitable to monitor online the power unbalance of a multiple cylinder engine using thermal parameters method and IAS method. However, a combination of thermal parameters method and IAS method cannot identify a specific fault. A cylinder indicting diagram contains wealthy information of diesel engine working condition, therefore, the cylinder indicting diagram was adopt to analyze causes of specific faults. The analysis is conducted based on the working principles of diesel engines. The developed monitoring and diagnosis system has a significant advantage of less demanding in the installation requirements of sensors. It is applicable to all kinds of vessel without much modification required. The application of the system will improve the vessel's safety and reliability.
