Since the ban of R134a as refrigerant in mobile air-conditioning systems (MACs), HFO1234yf is considered as future refrigerant in new units. Several alternatives, including Hydrocarbons exist. Secondary loop systems mitigate the flammability hazard when using Hydrocarbons, while allowing for a more compact refrigeration system and a variety of thermal storage options. The experimental test facility features a virtual cabin model, which allows transient testing of MAC systems by combining real MAC components with the simulation of psychrometric processes in a passenger cabin. The current study focuses on the use of Propane (R290) as primary refrigerant in secondary loop systems. An ice storage system was combined with the coolant loop to evaluate the potential of advanced thermal storage options for secondary loop systems.
