A challenge that is opposed to a commercial use of brakes and clutches based on magnetorheological fluids are durable no-load losses because a complete torque-free separation of engaging surfaces is not yet possible. For meeting this challenge, novel approaches are introduced whose intention is the minimization of no-load losses. In this paper, one of these concepts will be presented in detail. It is based on a mechanical intervention in the fluid system and allows an enlargement of the fluid filled shear gaps. Due to an adaption mechanism, the brake can thereby be switched between an engaged and a disengaged state that results in a complete torque free idle mode. A realized proof-of-concept actuator will be presented and measurements will underline the feasibility and the intended functionality of the concept.
