A nondestructive testing method for inspecting the cracks in train wheels without dismounting is proposed in the paper. A high-spatial-resolution differential-type integrated Hall sensor matrix (D-IHaSM) is embedded into each half of the train rails to inspect a large wheel tread area. Thus, the wheel tread is easily inspected in real time as it rolls over the sensor system when the train enters its shed. In this experiment, some of the artificial cracks, such as hole-type, diagonal ellipse-type, and ellipse-type cracks, on the surface of the wheel tread are examined and inspected at a train speed of approximately 1.17 km/h. The smallest volume that can be inspected is 1.88 mm3. A crack with a volume of more than 15.07 mm3 can be estimated with a standard deviation of 6.97 mm3 using the output sum data. Furthermore, on the basis of the current proposed method, we believe that we can improve the system to facilitate inspection at higher train speeds and to estimate smaller crack volumes.
