Safety is a major issue for automotive development with increasing significance. Considering the full picture of road traffic safety there are at least two major issues to be examined: The first issue is about a safe function implementation called "functional safety" which ensures an acceptable probability of faults for critical systems states by the implementation of the upcoming international standard ISO26262 for the automotive domain. The second issue is about safety and human factors which might be combined into the term of "safe usability". For modern system design this issue implies to design the car and its assistance systems according to the needs and abilities of the driver which leads to a new design process leading to a driver centered design. The motivation for looking at safe usability with a focus on the road traffic safety is further given by the Statistische Bundesamt which states in its newest analyses that 86% of all accidents with killed or injured people do originate from driver mistakes. But to impose the whole responsibility to the driver is a too easy and a potentially illegal solution. A closer look within this paper/presentation identifies the real reason to be a flaw of the socio-technical work system consisting of the driver and the car (including its automation). Thus, accidents in many cases do not originate from a drivers mistake but as well originate from an inappropriate system design. This paper/presentation takes a closer look at the correlations of road traffic safety, functional safety and safe usability. As a blue print for the industrial implementation it proposes an integrated approach which combines the requirements of functional safety and system ergonomics into one consistent and structured process. This process will be the key for safe future complex automotive functions and assistance systems. The argumentation within this paper shows that the emerging property of road traffic safety can only be achieved by inherent system properties including functional safety and safe usability. Both safety properties do have their own ideas and approaches. Additionally embedded systems especially in the automotive domain have to meet well known requirements like using few resources, real time etc. To cope with this set of requirements an integrated approach on the basis of structured process was introduced. This integrated approach is the key to implement systems contributing to the overall goal of road traffic safety and to the vision zero.
