Overhead presentation. BioStruct is a large scale collaborative project funded by the European Commission. The project involves 21 partners from 10 European countries, and has a total budget of around €10 million. The aim of the project is to develop the next generation of wood and cellulose-fiber-reinforced composites - so-called "enhanced wood-plastic composites" or eWPC's. In BioStruct material development is accompanied by parallel process development to optimize the potential of the new composites under realistic, industrial processing conditions for the automotive, construction, electronics and packaging sectors. The paper gives an overview of the project's achievements in the areas of material and processing development. Newly developed bio-based PA is presented as well as new delivery forms of natural wood and man-made cellulose fibers. The discussion on the retained material characteristics of compound properties will show a broad application potential as well as new functionalities needed in technical applications. In order to guarantee safe and constant processing of these new materials, advanced compounding and injection molding processes have been developed to fully reveal the potential of these new materials. An important factor is the fiber length which should allow constant processing and dosing, and furthermore should assure suitable mechanical properties in the achieved demonstration or application case. Currently investigated Case Studies will be presented to show the new possibilities of these bio-based composites.
