The Soldier Systems Technology Roadmap is an initiative sponsored by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) and supported by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries. It identifies the short- and long-term needs to increasing the operational efficiency and protection of Canadian soldiers and their equipment. This article highlights some recent commercial developments in the area of textiles and textile equipment that specifically target the military sector's needs. Among the new technologies now being developed are e-textiles, nanomaterials, protective membranes, CBRN detection sensors, adaptive camouflage fabrics, lightweight flexible ballistic protection, exoskeletons, clothing that provides thermal comfort in desert and arctic climates, etc. The company Stedfast has developed an innovative ballistic vest against shockwaves resulting from the detonation of IEDs. The company TenCate has developed a new fire resistant fabric for use in the PUG (Protective Under Garment) program for the US army. The TenCate Defender M 6.5 oz. woven fabric is currently being worn by troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Oratex is offering certified fire resistant knit fabrics for outerwear garments and base layer undergarments. Hudson Supplies introduced new innovative fasteners and gear accessories that can be used, for example, to store weapon accessories inside storage bags. Hudson Supplies introduced its new GT ZipLine series that can be easily installed in many configurations for both apparel and equipment applications. Mawashi Protective Clothing Inc. is now developing coverall pants with integrated protection that are designed for optimizing the performance of infantry soldiers, special forces, etc.
