An automotive electric power steering system is a safety critical application and requires therefore high reliability. This paper shows that a multi-functional converter can drive a threephase induction machine with two remaining phases if one phase has an open-circuit fault. Compared to existing two-phase solutions the multi-functional converter has already a starpoint connection and requires therefore no additional switching devices. The proposed solution therefore combines the advantages of an integrated remedial strategy and an increased system voltage because of the integrated boost converter. However, the machine is supplied via the star-point, leading to superimposed dc currents in the motor windings. In this paper the influence of the dc currents to the mechanical torque of the induction machine in two-phase operation is therefore investigated. A prototype of the multi-functional converter with induction machine has been built and tested. Experimental results are in close correlation with theoretical predictions obtained from the analysis and the FEM simulations.
