The structure of aluminide coatings deposited on heat-resistant alloys (Inconel 100 and Mar M 247) by gas phase method (out of pack) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) was studied. The effect of deposition process parameters and chemical composition (element distribution) on the coatings properties and structure was studied. According to the cyclic oxidation tests, the aluminide coatings on Mar M 247 alloy exhibited the highest durability. Engine tests of coated blades showed the changes occurring on the surface of the vanes as well as structure degradation in the cross section. The coating spallation was observed in the high pressure area. The corrosion attack took also place. An increased amount of sulfur and zinc was found in the corrosion products. The cyclic oxidation resistance of the aluminide coatings was improved by hafnium modification especially by the arc-PVD treatment of the alloy surface.
