Two methods for calculating the risk during maintenance of a hot water pipeline were presented. In both of methods, the calculations were made for an actual steel pipeline. This pipeline was used to transport hot water (190 °C, 1.3 MPa to 2.7 MPa, power 110 MW, flow up to 700 t/h) from an electric power station to a sulfur mine. The first method was based on the analysis of the stress distribution in the pipeline working under loads and the strength distribution in the pipeline material. The second method was based on the growth rate of the corrosion, which resulted in the strength reduction in the pipeline material. According to the study, the pipeline corrosion plays the crucial role in the pipeline reliability. The corrosion could take place in many locations and decrease the material strength. The locations can be, however, hardly identified on the pipeline surface. A decrease in the pipeline wall thickness from 12.8 mm down to 7.5 mm during 11 year long period of operation was observed.
