On Japanese high ways, Electro-Magnetic absorbers are widely installed around ETC (Electronic Toll Collection system) in order to prevent electromagnetic interference in communication between the ETC and cars. In this system, a 5.8 GHz circular polarization wave is used. This communicating protocol is described as national standard ITU-R M.1453. Recently, transparent and highly durable absorbers are required. We have developed a glass absorber which has an absorbance of over 20 dB for an incidence angle between 0° and 45°. This absorber is special laminated glass which consists of two conductive glass sheets and PVB film. Various parameters such as the material thickness and surface resistance are designed by the four-terminal network method. We confirmed that measured values of absorbance agree with theoretical values. We propose not only a glass absorber but also a panel structure including a finger shaped metal frame. It can optimize various requested issues such as electromagnetic absorption, window pressure resistance, stress concentration around the finger, and so on. In Japan, ETC technology will apply to other ITS (Intelligent transfer system) systems. Hence we expect the application of glass absorbers will expand.
