This paper is focused on the drilling of bore holes with high length-to-diameter ratios and diameters less than 2 mm which are needed, for example, in medical and automotive applications. In the first part of this paper, the influence of tool geometry on tool wear and chip formation in single-lip deep hole drilling has been presented. By varying the tool design the chip formation can be optimized and the tool wear can be minimized. When using coated tools with a chamfer in the tool tip area, the productivity achieved was comparable to the productivity achieved using twist drills. In the second part of this paper a combination of laser drilling and single-lip deep hole drilling has been presented. With this combination, the process chain in deep hole drilling of workpieces having inclined surfaces can be shortened as a face milling process is eliminated which would have been a necessity in a conventional process. The tool wear when machining case hardened workpieces is minimized as well. Using this technology, tool life and bore hole quality achieved was comparable to that of a conventional process.
