A bogie-mounted system to detect and measure wheel rolling was designed, built and tested in the field. Its high precision and modular design makes it suitable for the detection of wheel rolling. The system can be bogie-mounted on a railway unit. The system makes use of technologies such as photodiodes, radio frequency modules and an oscilloscope. The design of the hardware was discussed, and the requirements that have been met were explained. In short intervals, the precision of the system allows the system to measure wheel slidings of up to 4.4 mm in length at a maximum speed of 50 mph. Shorter distances can be measured when the speed is lower. In long intervals, another analysis was proposed to detect possible slidings. Furthermore, a series of experimental tests were carried out in the field to acquire data for subsequent post-processing and analysis. It is concluded that wheel sliding exists and that wheels do not roll correctly all of the time. The obtained results make it possible to detect the topography of the route and show that in for tracked curves, the wheels rolled differently. In future work, the system will be used for new purposes and more tests. For example, the system can be extended to allow information to be acquired and compared for more than two wheels and thus a complete railway unit could be inspected. To obtain a long-term solution, the durability of the designed system is critical, and thus the batteries should be replaced by connecting the bogie modules to the power of the train. Moreover, the photodiode-based inspection technique cannot be a permanent solution. Dust, dirt and the disappearance of the paint pattern would make this optical system imprecise. Other techniques can be applied, such as Hall effect magnetic sensors or GMR sensors.
