In the automotive industry a strong trend towards electrification is determined. The limitation for this is the conventional 14V power net. The required high electric currents lead to increased line losses and/or larger wire cross-sections. With the introduction of a second low-voltage level (< 60V), these problems can be circumvented. The additional degrees of freedom in designing the vehicle electrical system with several voltage levels require an increased cooperation between the various disciplines in the development process to gain an optimum configuration concerning costs, energy consumption, wiring losses, cable weights and so on. The presented work proposes a modern co-simulation approach to make both the design and evaluation of a vehicle electrical system more efficient. On the example of a modular hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) concept, simulation models from the fields of electrics, electronics, mechanics and thermodynamics are integrated into an overall vehicle model via the co-simulation platform ICOS (Independent Co-Simulation) developed at ViF. The virtual prototype vehicle is used to analyze the stability behavior of different vehicle electrical system configurations.
