Technological developments made in various, fields have undoubtedly increased the quality and value of human life. Protective clothings are now a major part of textiles classified as technical or industrial textiles. Protective clothing refers to the garments and other fabric related items, designed to protect wearer from harsh environmental effects that may result in injuries or death. (Adanur, 1995) Defense forces on land, sea or air throughout the world are heavily dependent on technical textiles of all types, woven, knitted, non-woven, coated, laminated etc. The critical life requirements for protecting individuals from both environmental and battlefield threats have ensured that the major nations of the world expend significant recourse in developing technical textiles for military use. Protections of military personnel differ significantly in many respects from protection of civilians. Military persons face many complex hazards which are deliberately aimed at maiming or killing them. Among the weapons which military forces face are ballistic projectiles such as bullets, flying debris, bomb grenade fragments, flame, radiant heat and radiation. In recent years another category of weapons known as non-lethal weapons like rubber bullets, blinding laser, water canon, high intensity sound and mind altering drugs. The most important and prevalent hazards to troops on the ground are extreme weather and environment conditions of cold, heat, rain, snow, dust, wind and adverse terrain posing a significant risk to the efficient function of troops. The functional criteria for military textiles are dealt with physical, environmental, camouflage, specific battle field threats, flames, heat and flash, and the economic consideration. The functional performance requirements for military textiles are manifold and complex.
