The automotive industry is driving the implementation of systems driven product lifecycle management method, processes and tools. Most OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers consider a consistent systems driven framework as the only way to comply to the strict traceability and consistency requirements mandated by emerging safety standards. Moreover, systems engineering, in association with powerful variant management and cross domain schedule and change management appears as the paradigm capable of controlling the complexity of vehicle platforms and get to the next level of componentization an re-use. In order to succeed in this transformation of processes and organization, IT and business managers need to evaluate their PLM platform and tool ecosystem both from a functional and architectural standpoint to determine how to support these upcoming needs. Is the platform suitable to truly support a consistent model-based development process? Can it support a changing and evolving toolchain for mechanical, electrical, electronic and embedded software design? Can it provide a single backbone for a geographically distributed development team with deeper integration of suppliers and OEMs? Can it support the seamless integration of manufacturing and development?
