Battery electric vehicles allow local emission-free travelling and they are also capable of reducing the anthropogenic emission of CO2. Since the efficiency of the drive train is much higher than in any combustion engine driven car the waste heat to heat the cabin is much lower. Therefore, the cabin has to be heated with energy delivered from the battery or other sources. When the energy is taken from the battery the effective range of the vehicle will be reduced. Hence, thermal management as well as energy management are very important. With the introduced simulation tool it is possible to determine the effects of the energy management on range and cabin comfort. Additionally to representation of the thermal network, an energy manager has been implemented which is able to switch off loads if the demanded range is not achievable under the given circumstances. A faster response could be realized with a gradient based switching scheme which results in a elongated travel distance. The estimation of energy consumption was improved by a route recognition and temperature depended start value estimation. Due to different operational strategies it is also possible to account for different preferences of the driver concerning the energy distribution within the system. Based upon the shown simulation tool the potential of different optimizations will be demonstrated. In the ongoing work different battery systems and their influence on the thermal management and energy management will be investigated. Furthermore, the energy consumption and the waste heat usage will be optimized. Giving one example, the necessary power to heat the cabin can be reduced by the usage of a controlled ambient air quota, as mentioned in literature.
