Optimization of fuel consumption per distance requires avoiding energy dissipation on each part of an entire route. However, local optimization criteria and maneuver-based assignments are inapplicable in order to achieve globally optimal results. Predictive information of the road ahead like legal speed limits, road slope, and curvature have to be included in the optimization. To effectively reduce overall fuel consumption manually, analyses suggest the following simplified acceleration and deceleration approaches: 1. Swift acceleration depending on the subsequent driving profile, on the subsequent deceleration and its resulting fuel consumption in particular. 2. Extensive use of anticipatory coasting, if possible with the engine turned off, to avoid depletion of the vehicle's kinetic energy. - Effectiveness of these measures has been approved manually under real-road driving conditions with a Porsche Panamera S Hybrid and a Porsche Carrera (Model 997 II) winning the 2011 eco-rallye Challenge Bibendum in Berlin, Germany. Executing an optimal driving strategy including the adjustment of velocity, torque, gear and braking can only be achieved effectively by an automated longitudinal control. Consequently, Porsche has developed ACC InnoDrive, an innovative prototyping Advanced Driver Assistance System as a logical step beyond conventional Adaptive Cruise Control. It takes into account various influencing factors including driver preference, road and vehicle characteristics, as well as traffic conditions. The system is currently installed and tested in two Porsche Panamera S test vehicles. Initial test drives show a great driver acceptance and a savings potential of 10 % on average compared to manual driving with equal average velocity. The system's software architecture is kept modular and thus expandable with further sensors for object detection and traffic situation interpretation. Future works will concentrate on the validation and generalization of the overall concept including the enhancement of digital map data coverage.
