The key aim of this paper is to describe the advantage of using simulation models for the development and test of driver assistance systems. As an example an advanced driver assistance system using a model-based predictive control algorithm is discussed. This type of algorithm could estimate the best driving strategy with respect to several boundary conditions based on a so-called electronic horizon. It is a combination of an adaptive cruise control algorithm using information from a digital map and is called predictive cruise control. It is shown that the development of such advanced driver assistance systems requires a simulation model for the vehicle, but also a realistic description of the whole environment, such as the traffic situation and road profiles that correspond to measured data sets. The requirements of the simulation environment are discussed and their usage in the control algorithm development process will be presented.
